DRAWING & DESIGN
Works on paper, digital illustrations, decorative elements for 2D & 3D, vector graphics, transparent motifs, diagrams, surface pattern design, leathercraft, etc...

INK PORTRAITS
Inks have a translucent, airy - yet vibrant - quality that puts me in mind of memories and old photographs. I find this medium lends itself well to capturing people in moments of action and stillness alike.

Adjust to any size without losing resolution. No blurriness, speckle noise, or chunky pixel edges. Transparent backgrounds allow graphics to overlap without pesky white rectangles getting in the way!
VECTOR GRAPHICS
Infinitely scalable digital drawings suit a variety of purposes, from quirky design elements to scientific communication.
TRANSPARENT MOTIFS
High-resolution scans of tangible, handmade art retain a more traditional artistic aesthetic.

Though not infinitely scalable (you wouldn't blow these up to billboard size), motifs made this way still have clean, fully transparent backgrounds which allow them to be scaled and placed according to most design projects, from custom fabric to wedding invitations.

SURFACE PATTERN DESIGN
Wallpaper, fabric, & items made from fabric. Browse designs in my Spoonflower shop.

DESIGN CONCEPTS
for artists, communicators, makers, designers, hobbyists, etc., to use in their own projects.
Say you want to make something yourself, or have it made by someone else, but first you need an artist like me to help with the plan, or to create elements to be used in the final product. No problem! I can help with:
tattoo design concepts
-
line drawings to guide embroidery
-
colour-block drawings for cross-stitch design
-
abstract decor visual aids & DIY plans
-
more than I can list - please ask!

NATURAL HISTORY
Being a big fan of curio-style nature posters, I undertook the challenge of painting these fancy male birds on a single sheet of watercolour paper in transparent layers of vibrant acrylics. Each bird is 1.5 to 5 inches long on the page, underneath which are handwritten common names and scientific binomials.
I also collect bones and grow plants, which provide a never-ending supply of inspiration and opportunities to develop my observational skills.

ILLUSTRATING SCIENCE
Imagery can be a great aid to sharing ideas. in a scientific context, it's important to highlight the critical aspects of the topic and defining features of the organism in question. Luckily, I love talking to students and professionals about their work.

Growth patterns of browse
The illustrations above were made from photographs of apple and willow tree species provided by a researcher at the Toronto Zoo in collaboration with the University of Guelph. They were used in a master's thesis and presentations regarding the effects of pruning patterns on branches used as animal feed and enrichment.
Life cycle diagram
The above illustrations were created for use in diagrams to show the life cycle of Michrodochium nivale, a fungal plant pathogen. The transparent .png files were used in multiple figures in a master's thesis and presentations by researchers at the University of Guelph.

DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION
Drawings made with a digital pen on a tablet.
When it comes to the end product, the difference between digital drawings and digitized ones may be immaterial, but creating work with a digital pen on a screen or drawing tablet surface is a skillset unto itself, and something I've enjoyed adding to my toolbox.

Steve, Oscar and Hugo
are going places... and getting into things!
"Where is Everyone?" is a custom storybook created for a special little kid, featuring the cats they're growing up with, as well as one they didn't get to meet. Based on real life with photos supplied by family, it will not only be something special to look back on when they're older, but enables elders and siblings to engage by arranging a photo-to-illustration matching game. Even though it's dedicated to a particular kiddo, I wanted to make it more than just a cute collection of illustrations. The story also provides opportunities for any child to practice "position" words, and talk about their own homes, family and pets.
